Baston in the Blitz

Once again, we took part in the Cold War section of this event.  We set up the Clansman masts plus the Club gazebo and a 9X9 Army tent on Friday 3rd August. On Saturday I brought along the HF Clansman radios plus a lot of display and demonstration equipment. We operated 2 PRC 320 radios, using LSB 7 MHz and USB 14 MHz both attached to dedicated dipoles.

On both days, the temperatures soared to over 30 degrees this made operating under canvas exceedingly uncomfortable. The band conditions were appalling so contacts were hard to come by. We experimented with different antennas but it made little difference, the band conditions remained poor.

On the Sunday I brought along the club Icom IC 746 and Sigma multi band vertical but there was no improvement, the bands remained virtually dead. We did make a few contacts on 14 MHz but even Italian stations were weak.

Although it was not a great success ref Radio and public, we enjoyed the weekend.  On behalf of the Events Team, I would like to thank those who helped set up, operate and breakdown the station at the end.

A special thank you to Edwin, G0LPO, who travelled up from Braintree, Essex, to help on the Sunday
